According to Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) figures, Unst disposes of approximately 127,050kg of food per year. This contributes towards 20% of CO2 emissions produced by the United Kingdom.
The project has two main purposes: 1. Reduce household food waste on Unst 2. Provide composting service/product for Unst residents 3. Encourage agricultural work on the island. The project aims to provide one small indoor food bin and one large outdoor wheelie bin per household for food waste disposal. It is hoped a local collection service will be put in place for outdoor bins to be emptied once a week and taken to the composting and worm casting unit based on Unst. Composting will be done through a HannaT60 - a certified cylinder system with the whole process remaining natural, including temperatures. Due to the length of time spent inside the cylinder system, the finished compost product will be stable with little to no smell. Compost will be made available to local Unst shops, residents and will also be supplied to outlets on mainland Shetland. Due to equipment capacity, this project will involve a maximum of 70 households; however compost will be made available to the population, ca of 640, and outlets further afield. |
