ni4cb: super fast broadband
page "North IslesNORTH ISLES COMMUNITY FOR BROADBAND (NI4CB)
This collaboration project between the North Isles, Northmavine and Skerries community groups aims to ensure that everyone in all the included communities has access to next generation broadband servicese that will not only deliver minimum next generation speeds of 30 Mbps, but will also be easily and inexpensively upgradable to services of 100Mb plus. The need and demand for these services in the communities continues to increase. This project is registered with Community Broadband Scotland (CBS).

The limited roll out of the Step Change scheme by BT across the north isles, where and when it happens, will still leave large sections of the community without access to next generation services. Some areas such as Fetlar and Skerries are unlikely to be included in the roll out at all. As the Step Change project for a number of reasons takes priority over our community scheme. Ni4cb will be left to try and connect up the large number of people which the Step Change project doesn’t reach. These are likely to be the most challenging and expensive places to connect.
The ni4cb partnership must now decide on the best long term option to offer a sustainable superfast broadband service to all residents across the target areas. Factors being considered are: cost effectiveness, reliability, installation, management, maintenance and durability. Alongside our project it is essential to understand the progress of the Government’s national Step Change programme that is being delivered by BT and the additional challenges that our project faces as a result.
